Movie on Imran Khan: Will ‘Kaptaan’ hit a sixer?

LAHORE : A group of young independent filmmakers has undertaken the initiative of producing an independent feature film called Kaptaan, based on Imran Khan’s high-profile lifefollowing the end of his cricket career.
As Pakistan’s former captain or Kaptaan, Khan stamped the cricket field with his talent and charisma.  Years later, he is just as famous after transforming into a successful politician and social activist. The movie based on the former cricket star’s life, which is still in post-production phase, explores the experiences of a man who dedicates his life to his country while also struggling with personal and spiritual anguish.
Faisal Aman Khan, an independent filmmaker who is based in the UK, is directing the film. Aman Khan admitted that he had the idea of making this movie two years ago after he graduated from film school. According to his colleagues, Faisal met Khan several times during the research phase of the project to get his endorsement.
“Imran Khan was reluctant at first and claimed that it was more important to focus on other aspects of the country, Faisal’s persistence finally paid in ultimately convincing him,” said Naveed Anwar, the film’s assistant director and screenwriter. “We wanted to make a film that would project the positive side of Pakistan. It was hard as there are very few personalities in Paksitan that have a global appeal.”
Anwar, who has directed several short films, explained that the story centers on how Khan’s disappointment at Pakistan’s dismal state of affairs triggered him to enter the political arena. He also juxtaposes Khan’s struggle for Pakistan’s future with that of Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s.
The film also recreates scenes of major incidents such as his arrest at Punjab University in Lahore, his hunger strike while in jail and then certain intimate scenes with his ex-wife, Jemima Khan.
A big challenge before shooting the movie was the selection of the actor suitable for the protagonist’s role. After numerous screen tests and auditions for the lead role, the team decided to pick local model Abdul Mannan, who has an uncanny resemblance to the cricketer. Anwar said that it was especially difficult to find someone who could play Khan’s part, since there were very few people who match the physical features and demeanour of the 1992 World Cup captain.
Mannan, who is not an avid follower of Pakistani politics due to its dismal state, said that he had to study various video clips of the cricketer-turned-politician to do justice to the role. He claimed that the film provided inspiration and would make people realise the state of the country and hence take more interest in its affairs. “There have been films such as Jinnah and Gandhi, this is another inspiring story of a nation’s hero,” said Mannan. “There are things people forget about him.”
Mannan is paired with Saeeda Imtiaz, a Pakistani-American model based in New York, who is playing Jemima Khan’s role. Her role highlights the various challenges of living in Pakistan that Khan’s former wife faced and also highlights her complex relationship with the former cricket star. Imtiaz, who took nearly six months to prepare for her part, says “The way the movie is shot — the use of lighting and the fact that the filmmakers are young and full of ideas — will give the film a unique look,” said Imtiaz.
Insiders claim that the film will be ready for distribution this fall but are staying tight-lipped about the scheduled date for the release. Currently, the plan for distribution is that it will get a theatre-wide release in Pakistan and abroad as well. Over 107 actors have been used for the movie and the production team includes 12 people.

Bol (2011) - MP3 Songs

Talking about Bol

After a long lull in Pakistani cinema, Bol has finally given the masses a reason to flock cinema halls. Maestro Shoaib Mansoor, who created a furore amongst the public with Khuda Ke Liye, is finally releasing his new film after a hiatus of five years. Bol goes on floors nationwide today, June 24, and the public is as excited as the film’s actors about its release.
The cast includes stalwarts like Irfan Khoosat and Shafqat Cheema. Humaima Malik plays the role of the lead female protagonist and Iman Ali, who also had a prominent role in Khuda Ke Liye, features as a dancer. Additionally, iconic singer Atif Aslam and VJ Mahira Khan make their acting debut in the movie.
The videos of the movie’s songs, which were leaked earlier, have also been creating a buzz amongst audiences. The chemistry between Aslam and Khan is certainly refreshing in the videos for “Hona Tha Pyar” and “Aaj Bol Do”.
The Express Tribune spoke to the two young stars about their experience of working in the year’s most awaited film. Aslam explained why he excitedly seized the opportunity to work in Bol. “When Shoaib Mansoor approached me, he explained that my character will give people a reason to smile and inspire them to speak out. After hearing this, I accepted the role right away,” said the iconic singer.
Aslam, who is hugely popular across the border, preferred Bol over other offers that came his way from India. “The reason why I am popular today in India is because of my initial success in Pakistan. So I will give precedence to Pakistani ventures. Even though I had offers, including one from Mahesh Bhatt, I preferred Bol,” he said.
Aslam, who also features as a playback singer on the soundtrack, confessed that he found acting far more challenging than singing. Yet, he said that he still enjoyed it immensely. “I was so engrossed in acting that I never wanted the shoot to end,” he said.
Even though Aslam’s role of a doctor is starkly different from his effervescent persona in real life, the singer was still able to relate to his character. “I haven’t played with pigeons in a village like I do in the film, but since I also come from a middle-class family, like my character, I am well aware of the hurdles and blessings one has in such an environment,” explained Aslam.
As far as his chemistry with Khan is concerned, the singer fondly said, “I guess only the audience will be able to tell whether we shared a good on-screen chemistry.”
Aslam was quick to add that working with Khan was great off-screen as well. The young VJ also concurred with Aslam’s opinion about their time on set. “It was excellent working with Atif,” exclaimed Khan. “Since this was our first acting experience, we really helped each other immensely. We laughed and sang and just had a great, fun time together.”
Elaborating on her role, Khan said that her character is of a girl from a conservative lower middle class background, living in old Lahore. She is a love struck girl who is yearning to experience the world,” she said. Mahira, who has a glamorous persona as a VJ said that she felt at ease in her modest character. “It was the easiest thing to put on a shalwar kameez because glamour is not really my thing. The hassle-free look was definitely a welcome change for me,” she said enthusiastically.
The nascent actor emphasised that the movie aims to highlight the stereotypes we deal with on a daily basis. “Bol tackles subjects most films don’t dare to venture into. The movie is not controversial but it speaks about the situation that exists in our homes, yet we choose not to speak up about them,” Khan said. “It is a film that will provoke dialogue and that will be an achievement in itself.”

Pakistan’s first anime series inspired by Punjabi characters of Rahi

Punjabi cinema has really lost its glory in today’s world and thats mainly due the mass production of low quality vulgar films having nothing more than ill directed bloodshed and same overused stories on love triangles. But there was a time when Punjabi films had a great market in local film industry and Sultan Rahi was one of the biggest selling names there. Since people here didn’t have any home-grown superheroes; Rahi use to be considered as one for many people in Pakistan. This mainly was because of his brave movie characters and on-screen attitude & style that he carried for a long time.
Our film and TV industry is constantly criticised by many people for failing to provide any local superhero to the younger generation of the country and thus superhero in Pakistan means nothing more than Superman or Batman etc. The same problem was faced by the younger generation of our neighbouring country India, but even they now have a superhero in form of Hanuman or soon in the characters of Sharukh Khan’s forthcoming Sci-fi superhero film Ra.One.
But people here shouldn’t worry for themselves now, as very soon they will also get to see a man with ultimate skills, courageous attitude, inspiring life style, speaking the national language of the country and behaving somewhat like a common Pakistani man and that all in a great quality animated series or you can say a cartoon in other words.
The upcoming animated series named Chota Jatt is actually the brainchild of a Boston-based Pakistani named Daniyal Noorani who is currently working in a biotech firm there and this idea of his is basically inspired by the Punjabi film characters portrayed by Rahi a decade ago.
“Characters like Maula Jatt or Shera Jatt are the only icons we have ever had in Lollywood”, said Noorani while talking to Express tribune. “We are using Lollywood films as an inspiration, but we are creating our own original narrative that will contain a lot of neat plot twist.”
Unlike Punjabi films which just aim a particular market because of the language issues, Chota Jatt will cater the nationwide audience as it will have Urdu its primary language.
“I have consciously made the decision that the show’s language is Urdu. There are certainly references to Punjabi cinema but we have made sure that they do not merely have provincial appeal,” explained Noorani.
An important role in the series will be played by the female characters of it and that surely will be something different and bigger than what we usually see in our Punjabi films. Noorani explained all this in somewhat this way, “Punjabi movies often feature very fiery women. Rarely are they the damsel in distress. The hero’s mother is completely dominating. So I think there are a number of elements of female empowerment within the films.”
In the “Chota Jatt” series, I see women playing an important role, as strong as an ‘atom bomb’ in fact,” he said, making a reference to cult Pakistani movie Haseena Atom Bomb.
Though Noorani initially had plans of airing the series through any of the mainstream channels of the country, but was disappointed with the kind of response he got from there, and now Chota Jatt will be aired through internet as “Webisodes”. However as per plans of Noorani, he believes he will soon be able to strike a deal with mainstream television channels of the country once the series creates its own market value.
Work on the series is in its full swing now and Noorani is currently working with a collaborated team of people from Pakistan and Boston. Since the project follows the format of Japanese anime, Noorani also collaborated with a Chinese animator. “I tried to recruit people from Pakistan but found that nobody had 2D capabilities and the only company that did was working on their own project.”
Above we showed you the poster of Chota Jutt showing you the lead character of the series and below we are attaching a description based 40-second trailer which will further give you an idea of what actually this series is going to be.
