New model hunt reality show to be launched

A new fashion-based reality show, titled ‘Wild Cat’, will air on Pakistani television soon. 14 amateur fashion models will be selected to participate in the modelling competition and to vie for the title of ‘Wild Cat’. The growing popularity of reality shows in Pakistan prompted the launch of the show which will provide a platform to fashion industry hopefuls.

The reality show will see contestant engage in interesting tasks from the sports and entertainment categories which will culminate in the show’s finale. ‘Wild Cat’s producers say the show will be an all out entertainer that will be fun to watch for everyone. The show will be hosted by Kirat Sabir and Fiza. It is directed and produced by Sohail Rizvi, while its media coordinator is Syed Fakhir Hussian.

I’ve signed a British film: Veena Malik

DUBAI - She is yet to make her Bollywood debut, but Pakistani starlet Veena Malik is already contemplating international cinema. The controversial actor informed the Indian media that she has signed a British film, in which she has a powerful role.

"I am getting many offers from across the globe," she said.

"Recently, a UK film team was in Dubai and I was shortlisting a few offers that would suit me. I have zeroed in on a few fashion projects and a film. I can't reveal more at the moment," says Veena, who is currently in Dubai.

Though the filmmakers in India are crying foul over her films here falling behind schedule, Veena says she will honour all her commitments.

Director Hemant Madhukar had reportedly said Veena has 11 crore riding on her and she is yet to shoot the climax of his thriller, Mumbai 125 Kms, which is expected to hit screens later this year.

"All my producers and directors are well aware of my schedule and I will not let anyone down. I am the leading lady and I am sure there are crores and crores riding on me," she laughs.

When asked if Veena is upset that her item number from her recently released film that starred Akshay Khanna was removed during the special screening for anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare at Ralegaon Siddhi and she retorts, "Well, it is the director's call and he knows better where to screen the song and where he shouldn't."

The latest rumour in tinsel town is that there is tension brewing between the two actors of Zindagi 50-50, Riya Sen and Veena. Buzz has it that the director of the film, Rajeev Ruia, is keen to cast the two ladies in an item number and had been canning their scenes separately for the film. "I am not sure about the item number because I have already shot two songs. I haven't really worked with Riya till now. But if the filmmaker chooses to shoot a song with her, I will definitely do it. After all, she's a wonderful actor," says Veena.

Finally, ask Veena about wrestler and Payal Rohatgi's boyfriend Sangram Singh, who turned down the offer of joining Veena's telly Swayamvar, despite being offered an astronomical sum of money and she says, "Did he? Well, I can only laugh about it."

Meanwhile, the actor reveals that wants to make the switch from women-oriented roles to comedy. "I believe it is very tough to make someone laugh and after the spoofs in my item number in my last release, I am hoping I will get some comedy roles soon," she signs off.

What was once considered the hub of all film-related activity, regularly visited by film folks and biggies of the industry, the Pakistan Film Producers Association’s (PFPA) office is now nothing more than a deserted, dusty, termite-ridden room. Unfortunately, the PFPA which used to be the most influential association made by the Pakistani film fraternity, has been inactive ever since it was disbanded in 2006 due to internal disagreement. With the Pakistan film industry in tatters, the country’s film producers have now decided to bury the hatchet and revive the association.

Inside Lahore’s film district Royal Par, a pensive-looking Chaudhry Kamran sits with a legal file containing details of the screenings of Indian films in Pakistan. Kamran, the producer of the Lollywood-hit film Bhai Log, has been one of the central figures contributing to the revival of the producers association. According to him, the association played a major role in helping the industry thrive in the 1960s and 1970s. “The Producers Association is the mother of all associations in the film industry,” says Kamran. “It played a vital role in getting rid of personal differences in the industry and also in giving the industry a proper structure in terms of its functions.”

Main functions

The organisation, which functioned as a backbone and platform for the entire film industry, facilitating the needs of other branches, maintaining discipline, had split up primarily due to disparity over the screening of Indian films in the Pakistani market. Kamran informs that the PFPA functions included selection of film titles, self-regulation on vulgar content and organisation of film releases. Additionally, a member from the association was, at the time, authorised to sit on both the censor board and the chamber of commerce which allowed for funding. These functions proved invaluable in making the industry function efficiently, adds Kamran.

Therefore, keeping in mind the past usefulness of the association, producers have decided to restart the process. The plan is to first appoint a board and a chairman, who will run the association, and this will be followed by elections for the association, which will be held after the first year. According to industry insiders, it is widely speculated that Ghafoor Butt, another integral member of the team striving to revive the board, will head the association. When contacted, Butt refused to divulge details and said his lips are sealed till the official public launch, which is expected sometime next week at a press conference.

What can be done?

There is also a divide regarding what has led to the decline of the film industry.

Some producers like Kamran contend that Indian films have led to its decline and a ban of all films from India is imperative to resuscitate faith in producers.

Meanwhile, Mustafa Qureshi, popularly known for playing the iconic role of ‘Noori Natt’ in Maula Jatt, feels that more fundamental issues such investor confidence in the industry must be restored. He also advocates the formulation of a set of standards which are in line with international markets. “The issue is that India is willing to screen our films and their market is far bigger than Pakistan’s,” says Qureshi. “The association will provide a platform through which producers can interact in a united fashion with government. However, for it to be effective, producers should also change their current mindset, they should embrace the challenge of participating in the global market.”

Nadeem Mandviwala, owner of Atrium Cinemas, explains that the organisation’s biggest concern should be disciplining the industry, essentially by releasing films on time and being more regular with film releases. “If there is a collective body through which all producers can address issues, it will certainly be a positive move,” adds Mandviwala.

Hence, all things said and done, it’s imperative to ask whether producers will actually start producing films more regularly once the association is fully functional, and Kamran seems optimistic. “We will advocate for the ban of Indian films will serve to protect producers’ interest; the association will not only restore the faith of investors, it will also provide some discipline in the industry.”

Veena Malik Denies Assaulting Her Co-Star, the Director Supports Veena - Pakium Article

As if Veena Malik’s “beauty” is so intolerable for her co-stars and peers that she is being alleged of difficult behaviours. This time, the blame is of her assaulting 3D horror film Mumbai 125 km’s co-star Vedita Pratap Singh. Landing into such controversies, the only option Veena is often left with is to straight out deny them. But this time, she does have a backing from the Telegu film’s director, Hemant Medhukar. Vedita Pratap Singh claimed that Veena Malik hit her hard deliberately while shooting a fight sequence for the film. Vedita said:

“It was an action sequence. I was supposed to be beaten up. I don’t know what happened to Veena. She actually hurt me and she did it so badly that I had nail marks on my body.”

She further said to Mumbai Mirror:

“I don’t know what was wrong with her. And then she pushed me so badly and banged my head on the rod. After the incident, I spoke to the director and told him that she is deliberately doing this. Acting is one thing, but this is just over acting.”

In Veena’s defence, Hemant said: Sidrah Zaheer

“I am not aware of any such incident on the set of my film. Since December 24, Veena has not shot a single scene for us. I don’t know what Vedita is talking about.”

Now when the director is on your side, then the final cut call is yours. Hence, in this case, Veena Malik seems to come out on top. Veena expressed her innocence saying:

“It is a concocted story. I have been in Dubai since the last 30 days. So, how can I manhandle or hurt her. The incident, which she claims to be real, is actually a reel shot and the injuries seen on her forehead were made up for the shot.”

She released a press statement saying:

“Who is this girl and why should I be insecure of her. She [Vedita Pratap] just wants to garner cheap publicity at my cost.”

Now this whole rumour is a publicity stunt for sure that will in the end, if nothing else, then benefit the film’s promotion. People would want to go in their eagerness to see the scene which has become the center of attention in the media due to Singh’s allegations.

Obaid-Chinoy on the power of storytelling

She stepped on stage seemingly nervous, but within seconds documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had the complete attention of her audience.

Speaking for the first time since she was nominated for an Oscar, she shyly admitted that she had not yet grasped what had happened. “I couldn’t believe it when I found out,” she said.

At the International Women Leaders Summit on Wednesday, the journalist and film-maker said what people in Pakistan rarely say; that in some ways, it’s a blessing being a woman in Pakistan. “There are so many liberties that we have on a day-to-day basis in Pakistan. These are luxuries for women in other countries.”

But Pakistan is a country of contradictions, she says. “There are some women who have complete empowerment and others have not been empowered at all.”

Speaking about her experiences in Arab countries, she said she had to get a certificate on morality when filming in Saudi Arabia. “I was the first journalist allowed to document the women’s rights movement in Saudi Arabia.” While filming for her documentary Women of the Holy Kingdom, Obaid-Chinoy spent four weeks in the country and said it was one exasperating process. “I was almost arrested once while filming for ‘attracting male attention’,” she said. “It’s times like these that you thank God that you are from Pakistan.”

After filming in Canada, Syria, Pakistan and East Timor, Obaid-Chinoy says, “Women around the world have the same issues.”

Obaid-Chinoy was nominated for an Oscar in the category for Best Documentary, Short Subject on Tuesday for her film Saving Face. In 2010, she received an Emmy award for her documentary Pakistan: Children of the Taliban.

First Pakistani documentary-maker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy earns Oscar nomination

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the renowned journalist and documentary maker, has become first Pakistani to earn an Oscar nomination with her film ‘Saving face’, which was named in the “Documentary-short film” category.

Obaid, who has documented numerous short films, won an Emmy award, back in 2010, for her documentary, ‘Pakistan Children of the Taliban’.

Commenting about this unique achievement, she observed, “I am speechless. It has reaffirmed my belief. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, if you put quality work out there, it will be appreciated. I hope I can make Pakistan proud by bringing home an Oscar.”

The documentary, ‘Saving Face’ is the story of two women from South Punjab who became victims of acid violence.

“It’s a positive story about Pakistan on two accounts: firstly, it portrays how a Pakistani-British doctor comes to treat them and it also discusses, in great depth, the parliament’s decision to pass a bill on acid violence,” she had commented when her documentary was short-listed for nominations, back in October 2011.

According to the Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Bill, the perpetrators of acid violence will be punished with imprisonment for life, and Obaid-Chinoy has captured that aspect in her latest project.

The documentary accounts the work of an acclaimed Pakistani-origin British plastic surgeon, Dr Muhammad Jawad, as he travels to Pakistan and performs reconstructive surgery on survivors of acid victims.

Acid violence, an extreme form of physical cruelty, is systemically describe in Pakistan; official statistics state that a hundred cases of acid violence are reported annually, though it is anticipated that the real figure is far bigger.

Due to structural inequalities, the women face immense difficulties to access the judicial system in addition to hoary cultural practices.

‘Saving Face’ is shot across twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and the small towns of Punjab. It will be on-aired in the US on March 8, at HBO, while it is due to release in the UK later that month, on selected cinemas, following which it will be released in Pakistan.

She is very brave and chooses stories that touch the heart and turns them into movies that break it. She covered many stories ranging from ranging from child abuse, violence against women, terrorism and natural disasters.

Wedding bells: Meera taking the plunge?

Lollywood actor Meera has announced that she is marrying a Pakistani-American airline captain Naveed Shehzad, Express News reported on Sunday.

“Shehzad is a family friend. My parents met his family a few times while in the US. They want me to settle soon and I’ll go with whatever their decision is regarding my future husband,” said Meera.

According to sources the actor, who recently adopted two baby deer in order to raise awareness about animal rights, is likely to get engaged to Shehzad on February 19 in Lahore. “Although I’m busy with various projects at the moment, but if our families insist, we will get engaged,” Meera said.

Meanwhile, Times of India quoted a source as saying, “Just because Meera wants to settle down doesn’t mean that she will give up acting”. The source also added that the actor will invite her friends from India to the wedding.

This is the second big wedding in the film industry in recent months with Lollywood diva and veteran actor-turned-director Reema Khan tying the knot with US-based Pakistani cardiologist Dr Tariq Shahab on November 19, 2011. The nikah took place at a court in Virginia, during which the actor wore a green outfit designed by Hassan Sheheryar Yasin. While talking to the media, Reema had advised girls to follow her example and abide by their parents’ decision concerning marriage.

Baba-e-Filmi Sahafat: The return of Nigar Awards

Students of media and film studies may have come across the term Nigar Awards, but the majority of the younger generation is not familiar with the fact that during the boom of Lollywood in the 1950s and 60s, Pakistan had its own awards to recognise the very best in the film fraternity. Back when films like Benhur (1959) were awarded 11 Academy Awards, Pakistani films like Chakori and Aina were being recognised by the Nigar Awards for being cinema par excellence.

The Nigar Awards were introduced in 1957 by Ilyas Rashidi, also known as Baba-e-Filmi Sahafat (Pioneer of Film Journalism) in Pakistan. The award was an extension of the Nigar newspaper, which was also founded by Rashidi in 1948 and was Pakistan’s first weekly newspaper dedicated solely to films and Lollywood.

After Rashidi’s demise in 1997, his project continued to flourish under his son, Aslam Ilyas’ surveillance. Aslam, who is also the editor of Nigar newspaper states, “We have been taking out this newspaper every week for the past 63 years. Despite the present state of the film industry and the sad death of my father, I have continued to look after it.”

The newspaper is still contributing persistently to the field of entertainment by highlighting cinematic achievements of Lollywood and by updating the public with celebrity-related news. However, the Nigar Awards have been missing from the Pakistani film scene since 2005. Aslam halted the awards — which were pivotal in bringing stalwarts like Waheed Murad and Nadeem to the fore — because of the depleting state of the Pakistani film industry.

When asked to elaborate on the sudden withdrawal of the Nigar Awards, Aslam states, “Who should I give the award to? Who is competing against whom? If only one out of five films is worth watching, then there is no point of setting up a jury and celebrating the occasion.”

Inspired by the Filmfare awards, the Nigar award was initially presented in nine categories which included Best Film, Best Director, Best Story Writer, Best Music Director, Best Actor (Male), Best Actor (Female), Best Singer (Male), Best Singer (Female) and Best Dialogue Writer. The jury comprised of poets, scholars, film producers and senior actors from all over Pakistan. Additionally, special Nigar Awards were organised for regional language films as well.

“There were separate Nigar Awards for Sindhi, Pashto and Punjabi films and it was considered a major achievement because there were ministers, ambassadors and other dignitaries giving away the awards and not just self-created celebrities,” states Aslam.

Legends like Murad and Shabnam to contemporary icons of Lollywood such as Shaan, Moammar Rana and Reema are proud receivers of Nigar Awards.

Even though the awards were not dependent on government aid and were funded by proceeds from the Nigar newspaper, the government still intervened and replaced the original form of the Nigar Award with a textual representation.

“The original award was a figure of a lady that my father had found in a metal workshop in Saddar,” says Aslam. “However, later in Ziaul Haq’s era, we had to replace the beautiful lady with a textual representation of the word Nigar. I was upset; I liked the previous one more because it embodied the class one attaches to an award ceremony. The statuette was something the winner would feel proud to receive and take home.”

However, the recent return of Indian films and the reviving cinema culture in Pakistan has given an initiative for young film-makers, directors and actors to come to the forefront and contribute. Cinematic advancements plus a flourishing TV industry seem like a perfect opportunity for the Nigar Awards to make a comeback.

“After a gap of seven years we are planning to bring the awards back. We hope to honour the best of cinema and TV collaboratively under the banner of Nigar,” Aslam beams.

According to Aslam, 40 awards will be given in 2012; 20 each for TV and film with special prizes for achievements accomplished in the last seven years during which Nigar Awards were absent from the industry.

Ishq Khuda to release on Eidul Fitr - Tribune Article

Pakistani film director Shehzad Rafique has marked the New Year by announcing that he will be directing a film Ishq Khuda. The director held an inauguration ceremony at the Alhamra Arts Council which was hosted by veteran screenwriter Pervaiz Kaleem. Produced by Saleem Zubair and written by Pervaiz Kaleem, the director has casted versatile actors including film stars Meera, Saima, Zara Sheikh and Ahsan Khan.

Rafique is primarily known for his Punjabi romantic film Mohabbatan Sachiyan and the success of his 2004 release Salakhain. Having developed a reputation over the years for creative storytelling using traditional concepts, Rafique’s film announcement has been endorsed by superstars like Shaan and director Syed Noor.

Regarding the story of the film, “It’s too early to disclose the details but it will be about the search for true love. The theme is based on Sufism — we want to promote tolerance while also making the film thought-provoking for viewers,” says Rafique who plans to start the shooting for the film on January 18.

In terms of technology, Rafique explains that the overall project will take eight to nine months to complete, the film will be shot in Sargodha and the production process will be completed in India or Malaysia. “Since Ishq Khuda is being produced on the same format as most Bollywood films, the quality should be up to the mark,” says Rafique.

Regarding the film content, screenwriter Pervaiz Kaleem says, “There will be no violence in the film. I have done over 200 films; I personal feel there is something special about Ishq Khuda.”

2011 A Lucky year for Pakistani Cinema

The year 2011 proved to be lucky for Pakistani cinema. Many new Pakistani films were released this year including ‘Bol’, ‘Love Mein Ghum’, ‘Bhai Loag’, ‘Son of Pakistan’. Many films are also slated for release next year, including Syed Noor’s ‘Price of Honour’, Wajahat Kazmi’s ‘The Dusk’, ‘Kaptaan’, ‘5 Ghantay Mein 5 Crore’, ‘Kolachi’ and ‘Seedlings’ by Summer Nicks.

With ‘Bol’ the audience flocked to the cinemas. Some left the auditoriums melancholic yet inspired by the Shoaib Mansoor masterpiece. Others thought the piece was overrated.

However on the downside, a few films that incorporated Pakistani talent were banned by the Central Board of Film Censorship (CBFC). One of these was British-Pakistani Hammad Khan’s ‘Slackistan’ which was banned on grounds of the film’s use of abusive language and words like ‘Taliban’ and ‘lesbian’ with some scenes showing characters drinking.

In a press release, he said: “The censor board’s verdict is oppressive, arbitrary and steeped in denial about life outside their government offices. Maybe the establishment’s view is that young Pakistanis saying words like ‘Taliban’ and ‘lesbian’ represent a more potent threat than the bullets and bombs that are, day by day, finding increasing legitimacy in the country.”

‘Tere Bin Laden’, which was not a Pakistani film, had vocalist and musician Ali Zafar playing the central character, was a medium grosser in India but was banned from being screened in Pakistan.

Ironically, Syed Noor’s ‘Ek Aur Ghazi’ was not only passed, but was also screened for a short time before it flopped miserably. This film was an aid to those who believe in arbitrary punishments meted out for people accused of blasphemy. According to Noor the film was based on a real life story of a man who stole a pistol inside a jail to kill a blasphemy accused. However the macbre line ‘Gustakh-e-Rasool Ki Saza, Badan Sarr Se Juda’, was something that openly showed his stance in the movie. Although the censor board feels that religious lines must be promoted in movies, but when it comes to vulgar dances, Syed Noor (read censor board) are all but one on the issue. Also, in the movie, when the blasphemy accused is finally killed, by no other than a Muslim who gambles and is into all kinds of vices, the entire jail staff begins to chant ‘Allah o Akbar’ (God is Great).

Shahzad Rafiq director of ‘Salakhein’ and many other films in Lollywood, said ‘Bol’ was a new benchmark for Pakistani cinema. “In order to reach somewhere we must improve our cinema technology and our story telling. Thought provoking issues in this context may lead us somewhere,” he said, adding that that Reema’s ‘Love Mein Ghum’ was a better effort than any other in 2011 in terms of production and ‘Bhai Loag’ also did well in its cinematography section.

But Rafiq says that the movies under production, which had incorporated Pakistani talent by being shot in Pakistan, directed by Pakistanis or have Pakistani actors in them will bring a more promising future next year. Rafiq himself is releasing ‘Ishq Khuda’ to be released at Eid-ul-Fitr 2012.

The death anniversary of legendary playback singerMalika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan was observed on Friday.

Madam Noor Jehan, also known as ‘Melody Queen’ was born in the Qasoor district of Pubjab on September 21, 1926. She is considered to be the greatest film and music personality of all time of the Pakistan show business.

Madam Noor Jehan started her film career at the young age of nine and soon became a renowned child artist. As she grew older she became famous for her acting and singing in Indian movies.

After the partition of the sub continent, she left Bombay and moved to Pakistan where she started her career as a film actress and singer. She was the first female to direct a movie and debuted with her film Chann We in 1951. Her last film was Ghalib, which was released in 1961.

Madam ruled the film industry for more than 35 years and sung appropriately six thousand songs for Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi films. Not only was she a celebrated playback singer but also a gifted ghazalsinger.

With rigorous training in classical music, Noor Jehan employed the essential features necessary to present the ghazal in an exceptional manner.

Son of Pakistan - A break away from Lollywood

LAHORE - A new Lollywood film, by Jarrar Rizvi, was launched on Thursday night at PAF cinema in an event attended by several actors. The film ‘Son of Pakistan’ has been produced by Chaudhry Hameed Alam, and directed by Jarrar Rizvi, while the cast has many Lollywood stars playing different roles including Shamyl Khan, Babrik Shah, Laila, Sana, Meera and Chaudhry Hameed himself. Among one of the heroes was TV actor Bilal Khan, who died last year on August 11, as a result of a Fire Broke out in the hotel situated in Islamabad.

The film is a step away from typical Lollywood practices. For one, the director’s idea of the message was far more open minded and secular than are most of others. In an interview with Pakistan Today he said that he wanted to portray Pakistan in the film as a peaceful and tolerant nation.

“The world is calling us a terrorist nation, and they are wrong,” says Rizvi, who has extensive experience in film making in the Pakistani cinema, and is known to have a unique vision. He said the film industry is suffering more because of the attitude of many of the stars rather than anything else. “It is sad that when India produces a new film, they travel all around the world trying to promote it. Here, unfortunately, they don’t even come to promote their own film, because they are busy doing something else,” he said. “We are not to blame for the films doing badly at the box office; it is not India’s fault on whom many people within the industry conveniently lay the blame. It is our own fault. If India does a Punjabi film and asks our own actress Sana to come, she will readily go, but she won’t have time for our Punjabi film projects,” he said slightly annoyed.

Film actresses, Meera, Sana and Laila were not seen at the red carpet, neither were film stars Babar Ali and Shafqat Cheema. The only actress present was new comer Silla Hussain and Shamyl Khan. Shamyl Khan expressed his happiness at the film’s release to Pakistan Today: “I am sure that the film will do well at the box office and I feel happy and proud to be associated with such a project,” he said.

‘Son of Pakistan’ was also unique in the aspect that it promoted nationalism, rather than radical and volatile Islamism, which goes against India. In fact, Sikhs and Christian characters were shown in the film, and both of whom were protagonists. Rizvi tried his best to depict Pakistan as a hub of religious harmony. Not many would agree, but in a fictional film being produced by Lollywood, which often blames India for everything, and upholds an all-Muslim ideologue, this is original and if this trend catches on, it may push for change among people.

The most important part was that of the militants who live on the Pak-Afghan border, and are the true villains of the film. Abu Zayed (played by Babar Ali) who had the support of the West, Isaac (played by Shafqat Cheema). Also rather than the Pak Army as the tradition and typical heroes, Rizvi has shown ordinary cops to be the heroes. These ‘sons of Pakistan’ were SP Islam played by Chaudhry Hameed, and his brother Hussain played by Shamyl Khan. Of course there is a strong pun intended with regard to their names.

The songs and music of the film were also laudable. Though the film could not do without its typical song and dance routine, the songs were much less erotic and vulgar than for example a Pervaiz Rana film. The shots were much less suggestive, and in fact the music also seemed to be a progression in terms of composition, and arrangement.

Once again, though the camera work was shaky, and in some points in the film the horizon was tilting, it was impressive that almost all the shots were framed very well, with excellent lighting in all areas, indoors and outdoors.

The lighting was smooth and soft, rather than harsh or overly dim.

If there was one area where the film did not make it, it was the script and the screenplay. The script and dialogues were extremely tedious, using long formal words and language, which were overly bookish, and not colloquial enough; many long speeches were not delivered properly by actors, while at one point the film dragged because of being stretched too much. All in all, the film was a commendable effort by Rizvi and his crew at least for a start.

Rizvi is hoping to work on another film with a nationalist twist called ‘Maili Aankh’.

‘The Dusk’ eyes worldwide release in January 2012

LAHORE - Wajahat Kazmi’s film ‘The Dusk’ will be releasing in January 2012 world over in various film festivals, while in Pakistan the film will be released by February, he said in an exclusive interview with Pakistan Today. Kazmi, whose cousin Zeeshan is directing the film says that the film was a middle budget film (USD 95,000) and incorporated a completely new crew, to revive the film industry of Pakistan. But he refused to be connected in any way with Lollywood. “We are independent film makers, who are not connected with Lollywood, no one has heard about us, and we had no sources to support us through the project,” said Wajahat in his typical candid style of talking.

The film is about a doctor who is kidnapped some days after his wedding. He goes missing, and it is his journey that is followed along with his return back home and the circumstances he faces. “It is inspired by cases of missing people with similarities to Dr Aafia’s case, but it is not based by any one person’s story,” Wajahat clarified. “It is a film showing Pakistan in a post 9/11 scenario, and it will be a bit controversial because we have taken a bold stance about the American role in ruining our country with drone attacks and so many missing people,” he said. “No one has shown Pakistan being subject to drone attacks, so ours will be the first film in the world to do this. Also no one dwells on missing people and the horror their family faces and what everyone feels once they return after being tortured.”

He says that besides this, he has also tried to show the media’s role in the entire process. “We all know what politicians are, so I did not need to show their corruption and involvement, but I want to show the media anchors that pose and garner respect on TV yet in reality they are nothing by pawns and touts of different parties.” The film took about a year to shoot. It has been shot in many locations including Gujrat, Kashmir, Lahore and Islamabad. Unfortunately however, the film’s release is still uncertain in Pakistan thanks to the monopoly of a few groups in the censor and license boards. “I am not really unhappy about this because India has shown interest in buying the film and we are ready to sell it. We are not going to run after the censor board and distributors. If this film is released in India and not here, they themselves will be at a loss.” Release dates will be finalised by the first week of January 2012, he said.

Seedlings : Aamina Sheikh's Debut to Silver Screen

Movies give us the excitement, the rush, the medium of entertainment to bank upon. And when it’s a Pakistani movie, the excitement just increases manifolds. Our little birdie just whispered to us that a new movie has completed its post production and is all set to be released by the start of next year. The name of the movie is ‘Seedlings’, which is produced by Meher Jaffri, Summer Nicks and Craig Peter Jones under the banner of their production house, ‘Bodhicitta Works’.

It is an Urdu film (its Urdu title yet to be confirmed) starring Aamina Sheikh, Mohib Mirza and Gohar Rasheed as the leads with Hira Tareen, Mehreen Rafi and Tara Mahmood in supporting roles. The original screenplay has been written by Summer Nicks and the film is directed by Mansoor Mujahid. The music has been composed by young and immensely talented Usman Riaz.

Mansoor Mujahid is a Karachi based director who has completed a Writing degree from Boston University and studied Film and Television from Szbaist University. He has made a couple of short films that have subsequently earned him to receive Best Director and Best Actor nominations at the 2010 Leeds Metropolitan University Film Festival, UK.

The cast includes names like Mohib Mirza and Aamina Sheikh that makes us look forward to the venture even more. Gohar Rasheed, though a relatively new face, is refreshing and we have high hopes from him. The story of the movie is still not revealed. In fact, nothing about the movie has been given out except for the cast’s names.

With the credentials of the cast and crew, it’s not a surprise that we are already waiting for its release. All these professionals have proved themselves in their respective fields and are now ready to entertain us too. For now, we can just hope they have a gripping storyline with its share of twists and turns. Here’s hoping this film gives our local cinema, the much needed push towards revival.

Seedlings: Taking root

This year has proved to be a good year for Pakistani cinema; from Bol to Bhai Log, viewers had the chance to experience different genres. A number of other films such as Rafina, Waar and Kaptaan are underway and one film that has a lot of expectation attached to it is Seedlings. The film is an initiative of the makers of Kolachi; a sci-fi film that shows Karachi’s state after an apocalypse-like disaster hits the city.

“Our focus is on Seedlings these days, but Kolachi is also underdevelopment,” state Summer Nicks and Meher Jaffri , who are the co-producers of the film along with Craig Peter Jones. “Kolachi will hopefully enter the pre-production phase in early 2012.”

The team works under the banner of Bodhicitta Film Works and has been associated with many small-scale to medium-scale ventures.

Seedlings may come as a surprise to many, because unlike the team’s previous project Kolachi, the film is an everyday human interest story told in a unique way. Seedlings is an Urdu film (its Urdu title yet to be confirmed) starring Aamina Sheikh, Mohib Mirza and Gohar Rasheed in the lead roles and has Hira Tareen, Mehreen Rafi and Tara Mahmood in supporting roles. It has been directed by Mansoor Mujahid and shot by Faraz Iqbal, the same young duo who was behind the promotion video of Kolachi.

“The story is a about a couple and the rush of emotions they experience when tragedy strikes,” says Nicks, who has also written the film. “The thing that I most liked about the film is that it’s not about political corruption, terrorism, socio-economic constraints or any other tragedy that we read in the paper and see on television every day,” says Mujahid. “To be precise, Seedlings is very real.”

The young film-maker has high hopes from his first feature-length directorial. “The challenge was to present a cliched topic in a different manner,” says Mujahid who is ready to handle the criticism which Seedlings may face. “There will be people who like it and there will be those who dislike it, but everyone would agree that it is a different film.”

On the other hand, Jaffri, who is the co-producer of the project, has bigger issues to tackle, one of which is the distribution of the film in Pakistan and abroad. She is confident about the quality of Seedlings, but is still skeptical about the distribution of the film because of the depreciating economic conditions. “If everything goes according to the plan then it will definitely screen in cinemas in India and in Europe. The films is good and the success of films like Bol show that Pakistanis abroad are very supportive of Pakistani films,” says an optimistic Jaffri.

Seedlings also features 21-year-old musician Usman Riaz, who has written the score of the film. Having Riaz on board makes Seedlings a project to look forward to by both cinema and music enthusiasts.

Even though Nicks, Jaffri and Mujahid have different responsibilities in the company, the entire creative team as a whole, was full of praise for the acting capability, and more importantly, the professional attitude of Aamina Sheikh and Mohib Mirza.

“They were more passionate than us and always acted like actors and not celebrities,” says the Seedlings team. “When we were planning to turn the rough cuts into a telefilm, they were the ones who pushed us to go for the big screen. All in all, we are spellbound by the acting and the professionalism of the couple.”

Bodhicitta Works has just wrapped up production and have entered into the post-production stage. The team is looking for local media partnerships, sponsorships and distribution channel within Pakistan. So far, Australian company, Onion Films has shown interest in buying the rights of distribution internationally.

ISPR documentary bags first prize at International Film Festival

A documentary by the Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), titled as “Glorious Resolve” received the first prize in the International Film Festival “Eserciti-e-Popoli” (Army and People) held at Bracciano.

More than 60 films, produced by the NATO and other 24 countries were presented at the film festival.

According to an ISPR press release, Glorious Resolve received the Jury’s Special award from the President of the Italian Senate.

“(It is) a technically outstanding and emotionally powerful dramatization of the story of the courageous soldiers under fire in a dire combat situation,” the President said.

The award was received by a representative of the Pakistani Embassy in Rome.

Glorious Resolve is based on a true story about the infantry soldiers “who fought against all odds when 1500 miscreants raided one of the section level outpost of an Infantry Battalion in South Waziristan Agency on the night of 29 May 2009.”

The documentary highlights “not only the sacrifices and achievements of the Pakistan Army in War against Terrorism but also its glorious resolve to uproot the menace of terrorism from Pakistan.”

Glorious Resolve recreates the sacrifice of 43 soldiers of the Punjab Regiment who laid their lives during the attack.

Abdul Rauf Khalid (Urdu: عبدالرؤف خالد) (died 24 November 2011) was a Pakistani actor, filmmaker and television writer/director. An ex-serviceman and bureaucrat, Khalid was known for his Kashmir based patriotic plays. He worked in films and television plays. He attended Islamia College, Peshawar.

Career:

In 1989, he wrote and partially directed PTV's thriller, Madaar, a seven-episode serial exposing drug trafficking, telecast from PTV Quetta centre. In 1991, he wrote Guest House a 52-episode comedy series that turned out to be a popular comedy series for PTV. Its characters became household names. Film star Afzal Khan, who played Rambo in the serial, came to be permanently known with the name even in his career in the filmdom.

In 1994, Khalid directed Angar Wadi, a 15-episode serial for which he was an actor and a producer apart from writing it.

Television serials:

In 1998, Khalid made Laag, a 27-episodes serial (written, directed, produced and acted). In 2003, Khalid released his debut film Laaj as (writer, director, producer and actor), although it reportedly did poorly at the box office. The film LAAJ won 12 Bolan Awards, 14 Graduate Awards, 4 National Film Awards and Luxstyle Award. In 2008, Khalid made his third television serial, Mishaal (as writer, director & producer), which was telecast from Pakistan Television on Tuesday evenings.

Painting:

His paintings have been exhibited in the World Fineart Gallery New York and the Omma Art Gallery in Crete Greece.

Death:

Rauf Khalid died on 24 November 2011 in a traffic accident on motorway near Sheikhupura.
